English Lecturer Practice Questions Day 2

RGUKT AP English Lecturer Practice Questions Day 2: 10 Challenging MCQs with Detailed Explanations

Posted on October 28, 2026October 28, 2026 By Sakunth Kumar No Comments on RGUKT AP English Lecturer Practice Questions Day 2: 10 Challenging MCQs with Detailed Explanations

A good practice test should do more than check whether candidates remember a literary work. It should also examine whether they can interpret a passage, identify the function of a literary technique and distinguish between concepts that appear similar.

Welcome to Day 2 of Sri Maata Education’s RGUKT AP English Lecturer Daily Challenge.

Today’s set contains 10 advanced multiple-choice questions based on the prescribed syllabus. Candidates are encouraged to attempt the entire set in approximately 15 minutes before reading the explanations.

Day 2 Practice Questions

Question 1: Shakespeare – The Tempest

Prospero’s decision to renounce his magical powers towards the conclusion of The Tempest is most convincingly interpreted as:

A. An acknowledgement that Caliban possesses superior magical abilities.

B. A movement from controlling others through supernatural power towards accepting human limitations and reconciliation.

C. A rejection of his political claim to the dukedom of Milan.

D. An indication that Ariel has permanently refused to obey him.

Correct Answer: B

Explanation: Prospero’s renunciation of magic accompanies his movement towards forgiveness and the restoration of political and familial relationships. His decision to break his staff and drown his book symbolises relinquishing the extraordinary power through which he has controlled events on the island. The action does not imply that he abandons his dukedom. Instead, it marks a transition from manipulation towards a renewed engagement with ordinary human life.

Question 2: Wordsworth – Tintern Abbey

Which statement best explains the development of memory in Wordsworth’s Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey?

A. Memory preserves sensory impressions without changing their meaning.

B. Memory transforms an earlier experience of nature into a source of moral reflection and emotional sustenance.

C. Memory is rejected because childhood experience has no value in adulthood.

D. Memory replaces the natural world with an exclusively supernatural vision.

Correct Answer: B

Explanation: Wordsworth describes how remembered landscapes have sustained him during periods of absence from nature. The poem traces a development from youthful sensory excitement towards a more reflective relationship with the natural world. Memory becomes an active influence on feeling, thought and moral awareness rather than merely a storehouse of past impressions.

Question 3: Keats – Ode to a Nightingale

In Ode to a Nightingale, the speaker’s movement between imaginative escape and awareness of suffering primarily illustrates:

A. The complete triumph of artistic imagination over mortality.

B. The tension between the desire for transcendence and the inescapable conditions of human existence.

C. The poet’s rejection of music as a source of aesthetic experience.

D. The superiority of historical knowledge over poetic imagination.

Correct Answer: B

Explanation: The nightingale’s song stimulates the speaker’s desire to escape pain, transience and mortality. Yet the imaginative journey cannot permanently remove him from the human condition. The poem moves between the seemingly timeless quality of the bird’s song and the speaker’s awareness of suffering and death. Its unresolved ending reinforces this tension.

Question 4: Robert Browning – My Last Duchess

The Duke’s description of the portrait in My Last Duchess is an example of dramatic irony primarily because:

A. The Duchess directly contradicts the Duke’s version of events.

B. The Duke unintentionally reveals his possessiveness and authoritarian temperament while attempting to justify himself.

C. The painter provides an independent account of the Duchess’s death.

D. The listener openly condemns the Duke during the conversation.

Correct Answer: B

Explanation: The dramatic monologue allows readers to infer aspects of the Duke’s character that he does not appear to recognise or openly acknowledge. His comments about the Duchess’s smiles, his aristocratic status and his commands expose an obsessive concern with control. The gap between his self-presentation and the reader’s interpretation is central to the poem’s dramatic irony.

Question 5: Samuel Beckett – Waiting for Godot

Assertion (A): The repeated actions and conversations in Waiting for Godot undermine conventional expectations of dramatic progression.

Reason (R): The play presents waiting as a recurring condition without providing a decisive resolution to the characters’ central expectation.

Choose the correct answer.

A. Both A and R are true, and R correctly explains A.

B. Both A and R are true, but R does not explain A.

C. A is true, but R is false.

D. A is false, but R is true.

Correct Answer: A

Explanation: The play’s two acts contain repetitions of encounters, actions and conversations, while Godot’s anticipated arrival remains unrealised. This structure resists the conventional movement from conflict to resolution. The recurring condition of waiting helps explain why the dramatic action appears circular rather than progressively resolved.

Question 6: Chinua Achebe – Things Fall Apart

Achebe’s representation of Igbo society before and during colonial intervention is significant because it:

A. Portrays precolonial Igbo culture as completely harmonious and without internal tensions.

B. Presents African society as historically and culturally complex while examining the disruptive effects of colonialism.

C. Treats colonial rule as the sole cause of every conflict experienced by Okonkwo.

D. Removes indigenous beliefs and institutions from the narrative.

Correct Answer: B

Explanation: Achebe represents Igbo society through its social institutions, religious practices, oral traditions, kinship relationships and internal contradictions. Colonial intervention produces major disruptions, but the novel does not idealise the precolonial community or suggest that every conflict originates with colonial rule. This complexity challenges reductive representations of African societies.

Question 7: Salman Rushdie – Midnight’s Children

Saleem Sinai’s relationship with the history of independent India is best understood through which narrative principle?

A. Historical events are presented through a fully detached and impersonal narrator.

B. Personal memory and national history are interwoven through an unreliable, self-conscious narrative.

C. The novel excludes political history in favour of private domestic events.

D. The narrator presents chronological accuracy as more important than interpretation.

Correct Answer: B

Explanation: Saleem connects his birth and personal experiences with major events in India’s national history. His storytelling is self-conscious, digressive and sometimes chronologically uncertain. Rushdie uses this narrative method to explore how historical meaning is shaped by memory, personal identity and the act of narration.

Question 8: Literary Theory – Match the Following

Match the critical concept in List I with the most appropriate description in List II.

List I

  1. Defamiliarisation
  2. Interpellation
  3. Différance
  4. Carnivalesque

List II

P. The ideological process through which individuals are constituted as subjects
Q. The disruption or inversion of established hierarchies through popular laughter and festivity
R. The renewal of perception by making familiar objects appear strange
S. The interplay of difference and deferral in the production of meaning

A. 1–R, 2–P, 3–S, 4–Q

B. 1–P, 2–R, 3–Q, 4–S

C. 1–R, 2–S, 3–P, 4–Q

D. 1–Q, 2–P, 3–R, 4–S

Correct Answer: A

Explanation: Defamiliarisation is associated with Viktor Shklovsky and Russian Formalism. Interpellation is associated with Louis Althusser’s account of ideology. Différance is Derrida’s term for the interplay of difference and deferral. The carnivalesque is associated with Mikhail Bakhtin’s analysis of carnival culture and the temporary inversion of established hierarchies.

Question 9: Phonetics and Phonology

Which statement most accurately distinguishes aspiration from phonemic contrast in standard English?

A. Aspiration distinguishes separate phonemes in every English word containing /p/, /t/ or /k/.

B. Aspiration is typically a context-conditioned phonetic feature of voiceless stops rather than an independent phonemic contrast in English.

C. English voiceless stops are invariably aspirated in every phonological environment.

D. Aspiration is restricted to voiced consonants in stressed syllables.

Correct Answer: B

Explanation: In many varieties of English, voiceless stops such as /p/, /t/ and /k/ are commonly aspirated at the beginning of stressed syllables, as in pin. They are generally unaspirated after /s/, as in spin. This difference is usually allophonic rather than phonemic: it does not independently distinguish lexical meaning in standard English.

Question 10: English Language Teaching – Audio-Lingual Method

A teacher uses repeated substitution drills, memorised dialogues and immediate correction to establish accurate sentence patterns. Which theoretical orientation most directly underlies this classroom practice?

A. Behaviourist learning theory combined with structural linguistics.

B. Constructivist learning theory combined with critical discourse analysis.

C. Humanistic counselling combined with learner-directed discovery.

D. Task-based learning combined with interactional negotiation of meaning.

Correct Answer: A

Explanation: The Audio-Lingual Method is historically associated with behaviourist accounts of habit formation and structural approaches to language. Repetition, pattern practice and reinforcement are central features. Although drills can appear in other teaching approaches, the combination of memorised dialogues and systematic substitution practice is characteristic of audio-lingual instruction.

How to use this practice set

Candidates should review not only the questions answered incorrectly but also the reasons why the other options are unsuitable.

For literature questions, return to the prescribed text and identify the episode, narrative technique or thematic concern being tested. For literary theory, prepare short comparative notes on related concepts. For ELT, connect teaching techniques with the theories that inform them.

A suggested target is 8 or more correct answers, although this is only an internal practice benchmark and not an official examination cutoff.
